Student Project: Installation at the former location of the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Assignment: Create an insertion into the existing Beaux Arts building which explores the dichotomy between a modern art gallery and a classical building.
Provide information kiosks and ticket counter.

The Placement of a modern art gallery in a classical Bueax Arts building creates a tension between the contained and the container. This installation flattens the perspectival space of classical architecture by taking the symbolic blank white wall of the modern art gallery and placing it in the center of the entrance hall. Thus the perspective of the series of entry halls is flattened as in modern art. The viewer sees not the next in the series of arches, but instead an video display of current and future events at the Museum of Modern Art.
